Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A metal and enamel device 1 inches (3.18 cm) in height consisting of a silver color metal crescent surmounted by a gold color metal double-headed axe, the handle couped in base.  Below the device a red scroll inscribed THAT THEY MAY FIGHT in silver color metal letters.

Symbolism
The crescent alludes to the Battalions service in Tunisia.  The double-headed axe expresses the Engineers dual function of construction and combat, and at the same time represents the units battle service in Italy.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 18 January 1967.

Gules, in base a crescent Argent and in pale overall a double-headed axe, the blade of the like, the handle Vert.

Crest

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Iowa Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Argent and Gules, a hawks head erased Proper.

Motto

THAT THEY MAY FIGHT.

Symbolism

Shield

Red and white are the branch colors of the Corps of Engineers.  The color green along with the red, alludes to the award of the French Croix de Guerre for service in Italy; also, red, white and green are the Italian colors.  The double-headed axe expresses the Engineers dual function of construction and combat, and at the same time represents the units battle service in Italy.  The crescent alludes to the Battalions service in Tunisia.

Crest

The crest is that of the Iowa Army National Guard.
